My weight has always been a problem for me. When I was in the sixth grade, I had to go to the school nurse and she wrote my mother a note about my weight. She stated that I was severely obese for a sixth grader and that I needed to be put on some type of diet or program supervised by a doctor to lose the weight. I weighed 152 pounds in the sixth grade. I guess that's to be expected since I was eating two hamburgers plus french fries and a large drink at one sitting. This eating behavior continued until I reached my highest weight at the age of 38, 259.4 pounds.
During this time period from childhood to adulthood, I tried every diet you can think, every diet shake, pill, drink, "magic potion," pre-packaged foods, weight loss groups where you have to weigh in in front of everyone, extreme diets including the cabbage soup diet (not very pleasant) and many more. Of course while I was doing the particular "diet" or "program," the weight came off, but as soon as I stopped the diet, the weight came back and then some.
It was December 28, 2011 that finally changed my life. I had a routine doctor's appointment with my OB/GYN and when the nurse took my vitals, my blood pressure was 162/109.
She looked at me and asked me if I felt dizzy, seeing spots, or felt light-headed. I answered “no” to all of her questions, but I must say, this was a very scary experience. The nurse then took me into a room and instructed me to lie down on my left side and she would check my blood pressure in another 15 minutes. While lying down, all of these thoughts went through my head including death or what if I have a stroke or heart attack. At that moment, the nurse came back in and took my blood pressure again. It had dropped to 152/98 which is still very high. My doctor was now ready, but she did not examine me initially. She told me to walk down the hall to her office because she wanted to talk to me. I thought this was just routine because this was my first time seeing this particular doctor and just thought this was a normal new patient visit. Little did I know, Dr. Newton was about to make a huge impact in my life that would rescue me from morbid obesity.
Dr. Newton looked me right in my eyes and tore into me. She told me that I was too young to have high blood pressure and too overweight. What hit me the most was when she stated that if I didn’t make some changes in my lifestyle, I would not be around to see my 1-year old twin boys grow up and they would be without a mother and motherless. I just started crying right there in her office. After our discussion, I was committed to make a change so that I would be here for my babies. Knowing that I had tried every diet, pill, and program in the marketplace, I knew I had to do something different. My sister had gastric bypass surgery in 2007 and lost over 150 pounds and still maintains a healthy weight to this day. I knew that I didn’t want to have gastric bypass surgery, but knew that a less evasive form of bariatric surgery was available, the Lap Band. My Lap Band journey began with a free consultation at True Results in Richardson, TX on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 7:00 a.m. There I met the staff and they discussed my history and my many unsuccessful weight loss attempts in the past. After visiting with the staff who are actual lap band patients, I knew this was the right choice for me to get to a healthy weight and maintain a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. After saying “yes” to have the procedure done, I had to wait six month due to insurance requirements. During that time, I had to attend monthly nutrition consultations, complete a psychiatric evaluation, and undergo extensive health testing to ensure I was healthy enough to have the surgery.
Here is it June 16, 2012, my 6th and final nutrition visit. A final visit to go over everything and to prepare to submit my paperwork to the insurance company for an approval. Now, I sit and wait until I get “the call.” They told me that it could take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to get an approval.
Today is Wednesday, August 15, 2012. I got a call today from Amanda at True Results and I’ve been APPROVED!!!! I am jumping for joy and so happy and excited, just a tad bit nervous. I think after having a C-Section, I’m not too worried about something like this especially since it is laproscopic. Amanda stated that she would send the paperwork and I have to start a pre-op diet on Saturday, August 18, 2012. So ready to get thin and get into a size SMALL! Surgery date is scheduled for Thursday, August 30, 2012. Pre-op appointment is Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 1:00 pm.
Today is Saturday, August 18, 2012 and the beginning of my new lifestyle of health and wealth. I start my pre-op diet today. First thing, I weighed myself and my starting weight is 256.4. WOW!!! I just think back. In 2009, I was down to 172 pounds. Oh well, that’s the past, this is the present. I bought everything I need for the next 12 days.
Not too bad. I still get to eat as long as it’s lean protein and unlimited green veggies. Not bad.
Today is Thursday, August 23, 2012, day #5 of my pre-op diet and I’m down to 251.6 after 4 full days. Not too bad! I’m feeling good. I just get a little hungry at times and I try to load up on water or green tea. I made my transportation arrangements yesterday to get to and from the surgery center. It’s happening!! I know this is not a cure all and that I’ve got to put some work into this and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS to the T. I just look at Tanjeeka from the promotional video and how she looks now. I want to look good and feel good. Onward I march.
Today is Thursday, August 30, 2012, SURGERY DAY! I woke up super excited after not getting
much sleep the night before. I wasn’t
nervous, just extremely excited and anxious.
My surgery was scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
I arrived at the Surgery Center of Richardson at 7:15 a.m. to complete
the final paperwork.
At 7:45 a.m., they called my name. IT’S SHOWTIME! Before I knew it, I was hooked up to the IV and the anesthesiologist was administering the medication to put me to sleep. All I remember is going through the door of the operating room and saying, “It’s here.” The next thing I remember is waking up in recovery around 9:20 a.m and thinking that I was shopping at the mall. The nursing staff were laughing and told me that I was not at the mall, but in recovery. After about an hour in recovery, they got me up and made me walk around the facility. Then they gave me a barium test to ensure that I could swallow fluids properly and that everything looked good with my new lap band. Next thing I know, I was being discharged and ready to go home at 11:30 a.m. I was home before noon that day. Not much pain at all and only 5 small incisions. This was awesome. No regrets at all, just wish I would have done this sooner.
Well, six months after my lap-band (March 2013) and
I am down to 188.2 pounds for a total weight loss of 71.2 pounds.
I cannot tell you how amazing I feel and look. My energy levels are extremely high and I am
able to exercise 6 days a week now. I
absolutely love my band and would recommend it to anyone. And I'm still losing!
The Lap Band is not an instant cure for weight loss. I call it my “food police” since it restricts how much food I can actually intake. Anyone with the band has to make healthy food choices and incorporate some type of daily physical activity in order to successful. I choose to be healthy now because I love the way I feel now. I’m now chasing my now children around the house and they are loving having the mommy active. I used to just sit down and watch them play. Now, I’m part of the action. What a great feeling.
Regarding my blood pressure, just say my most recent reading was 122/73. Now that’s what I call, “living life to the fullest.”
I recommend the lap-band to anyone who has struggled with
their weight, has tried every diet program available. For more information on how to schedule a
free consultation and how to receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card, simply complete the form on the right.
I will provide you with the information to schedule your free consultation and the mandatory code needed to receive your $25 Amazon Gift Card.
